Early land plant phytodebris

چکیده

Abstract Historically, phytodebris (often considered a type of non-pollen palynomorph – NPP) has played prominent role in research into the fossil record early land plants. This consists cuticles and cuticle-like sheets, various tubular structures (including tracheids tracheid-like tubes) sundry other enigmatic fragments. Initial focused on elucidating their morphology, attempts to identify them situ plant megafossils comparisons with potentially homologous extant The fragmentary nature these remains, associated difficulties positively identifying presence fossil/extant plants, resulted vigorous debate regarding what many microfossils actually represented relevance studies. More recently wider array analytical techniques been applied (e.g. ultrastructural analysis, geochemistry taphonomic experiments). However, positive identification affinities at least some fossils remained elusive. Ongoing investigations based exceptionally preserved material from Lagerstätten (charcoalified silicified) seem have finally demonstrated that more remains derive nematophytes probably represent fungi possibly also lichenized fungi.

The timescale of early land plant evolution

Establishing the timescale of early land plant evolution is essential for testing hypotheses on the coevolution of land plants and Earth's System. The sparseness of early land plant megafossils and stratigraphic controls on their distribution make the fossil record an unreliable guide, leaving only the molecular clock. However, the application of molecular clock methodology is challenged by the...

Early evolution of the land plant circadian clock

While angiosperm clocks can be described as an intricate network of interlocked transcriptional feedback loops, clocks of green algae have been modelled as a loop of only two genes. To investigate the transition from a simple clock in algae to a complex one in angiosperms, we performed an inventory of circadian clock genes in bryophytes and charophytes. Additionally, we performed functional cha...

Newly resolved relationships in an early land plant lineage: Bryophyta class Sphagnopsida (peat mosses).

UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY The Sphagnopsida, an early-diverging lineage of mosses (phylum Bryophyta), are morphologically and ecologically unique and have profound impacts on global climate. The Sphagnopsida are currently classified in two genera, Sphagnum (peat mosses) with some 350-500 species and Ambuchanania with one species. An analysis of phylogenetic relationships among species a...

350 my of mitochondrial genome stasis in mosses, an early land plant lineage.

Among land plants, angiosperms have the structurally most labile mitochondrial (mt) genomes. In contrast, the so-called early land plants (e.g., mosses) seem to have completely static mt chromosomes. We assembled the complete mt genomes from 12 mosses spanning the moss tree of life, to assess 1) the phylogenetic depth of the conserved mt gene content and order and 2) the correlation between sca...

Land Plant Evolution: Listen to Your Elders

The genetic and molecular basis of the developmental programs underlying adaptive morphological changes is largely unknown. A new study reveals an ancient gene that has been instrumental for the generation of morphological diversity and adaptation in land plants.
